We are excited to share our free, printable Julian calendar, and there are two types. A typical year in the Julian date calendar has 365 days, while a leap year includes 366 days. The extra day is added in February. The Julian calendar was invented by Julius Caesar and his team in 46 B.C. as a reform of the Roman Republican calendar. It remained in use for many centuries until the Gregorian calendar replaced the Julian calendar after 1582. Although it is no longer the standard for civil use, it is still used in certain communities and for scientific and religious purposes today.
The Julian Day Number, known as JDN, is a system used to count days in one continuous sequence. This count began at noon on January 1, 4713 BCE in the proleptic Julian calendar. Astronomers and scientists rely on this system to calculate long spans of time with accuracy. Days are counted from noon to noon. In modern use, the Julian date format is usually 5 or 7 digits long. The 5 digit format, written as YYDDD, uses the first two digits for the year and the next three for the day of the year. For example, 26365 represents December 31, 2026 and is often called a Julian code. The 7 digit format, written as YYYYDDD, uses the first four digits for the full year and the next three for the day of the year. For example, 2026365 also represents December 31, 2026. Day numbers range from 001 to 365, or 366 during a leap year.
